Algeria's security situation and role are extremely important not only for the security of the region, but also for the security of Europe, Tibor Benkő said after receiving an introductory visit on Tuesday, March 9, Ali Mokrani, Ambassador of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria to Budapest.
At the meeting, the Minister of Defense emphasized that the North African and Middle Eastern regions are among Hungary's foreign policy priorities. As he said, the strategy of opening up to the south has brought the states of the region into focus and opened up the opportunity to deepen cooperation.
The Minister of Defense pointed out: " It is extremely important for Hungary to establish closer co-operation with Algeria in line with the strategy for Africa adopted by the government in 2019, thus dealing more effectively with illegal migration and terrorism, which is a security policy priority for the European Union and Hungary".
The Minister of Defense pointed out that Algeria is one of the most important states in the Maghreb region and also in North Africa. It was also said that Algeria's security situation and role in the region are significant not only for the security of the region, but also for the security of Europe.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Defense ministries of the two countries in 2017 can give impetus to the Algerian-Hungarian military cooperation, which provides a good basis for deepening relations. However, the parties also reaffirmed their mutual intention to explore further areas of cooperation. Once the epidemic situation is over, the Ministry of Defense is ready to expand cooperation - added Tibor Benkő.
